Quick Facts
Overview
Dr. Oetker is one of Europe's largest family-owned food companies, with a history stretching back to 1891 when pharmacist August Oetker invented a pre-measured baking powder called Backin in Bielefeld, Germany. That simple innovation — guaranteeing consistent results by packaging exact amounts — transformed home baking and laid the foundation for a food empire that today spans more than 40 countries.
The company has grown far beyond baking powder. Dr. Oetker is now a major player in frozen pizza (Pizza Ristorante is sold in over 50 countries), frozen cakes (through Coppenrath & Wiese, Germany's market leader), cake decorating (through Wilton, the leading US brand), and beer (through the Radeberger Group, Germany's largest privately owned brewery group). In 2024, the company generated EUR 4.3 billion in revenue, with approximately 65% of sales coming from outside Germany.
Unlike most food conglomerates of this size, Dr. Oetker remains 100% family-owned. The company has never been publicly listed and has no institutional shareholders. In 2021, the broader Oetker Group was split into two independent entities after disagreements among the eight heirs of Rudolf August Oetker. The food and beer businesses remained under Dr. August Oetker KG, while hotels, sparkling wine, and chemicals went to a separate holding company, Geschwister Oetker Beteiligungen KG.
